Mars Hill Wind provides more than just economic benefits to the community. It generates 143,000,000 kilowatt hours of electric energy each year, clean, renewable energy that powers 20,000 homes, without any air or water pollution and with no greenhouse gases—a leading cause of global warming.
|
- No pollution: Mars Hill Wind creates zero air or water pollution.
- Reduced use of fossil fuels: The energy produced by Mars Hill Wind is the equivalent of burning approximately 280,000 barrels of oil or 76,000 tons of coal per year, yet has none of the associated toxicity, health, or cost issues.
- Fewer emissions: Based on data recently published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (U.S. EPA) Emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (E-GRID), traditional New England generation sources producing an equivalent annual amount of electric energy would emit greenhouse gases (GHG) consisting of nearly 65,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 70 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx). To put this in perspective, 65,000 tons of CO2 is equivalent to the annual emissions of over 11,000 cars or over 8,000 SUVs. In addition, equivalent energy production from traditional sources would produce approximately 169 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2). Both SO2 and NOx cause acid rain, which harms our lakes and rivers.
- Spaces remain open: Mars Hill Wind enables local property owners to capture a new source of clean energy without interfering with their current use of the land, helping to keep Maine open and beautiful.
- Safe for our lakes and rivers: Unlike conventional methods of electricity production, wind power uses no water and emits no mercury, a leading cause of contamination to our rivers and lakes.
