ABOUT THE 2007 AWARD RECIPIENTS

Maine Investor Awards:

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce recognizes Maine businesses for outstanding contributions to the growth of their companies and the state’s economy. We salute those that invest in the development of their community and our state.

UPC Wind’s Mars Hill Wind Farm Project

As a developer, owner and operator of wind farms, UPC Wind is a long-term partner with local Maine communities and with the state. Tax revenue from each of its wind farms helps communities pay for schools, maintain roads, and finance other municipal needs not just in the short term, but over a multi-year period. UPC Wind hires locally whenever possible, both during construction and for ongoing operations and maintenance, helping fuel economic growth for the future. For example, UPC Wind spent nearly $22 million with Maine-based companies during the development of the Mars Hill Wind Farm.

New England’s first utility-scale wind project, the Mars Hill Wind Farm, began its commercial operations on March 27, 2007. Combined with the current generation from Mars Hill along with its proposed Stetson project in Washington County, UPC Wind is projected to produce 312,500,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, wind energy annually, enough to power approximately 43,500 New England homes.

The generation of an equivalent annual amount of electric energy from a traditional fossil fuel burning facility in New England would consume over 612,000 barrels of oil or over 166,000 short tons of coal. Based on recently published data from the EPA, traditional New England generation sources would emit nearly 142,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), 153 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and 368 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in producing the same energy as the combined Mars Hill and Stetson Wind Farms on an annual basis.
